Banarasi sarees are an Indian woman's most valued possession. This stunning textile prospered in Varanasi. Vedic scriptures have recorded silk and brocade manufacturing in Banaras since the period before the Mughals. In fact, the tradition goes far back that sarees are mentioned in the Mahabharata, which dates between 1000 and 300 B.C.

Banarasi silk are traditionally made in four varieties, pure silk (Katan, organza (Kora), georgette and shatir. Other ranges include meenakari, zardozi, cansal, jamawar jamdani, banarasi net and banarasi cotton. Persian motifs were mingled with designs of Indian Silk for creating Banarasi Sarees.
